Beijing, le 23 août--Le Français Julien Absalon a conservé son titre de champion olympique de VTT samedi à Beijing au terme d'une course qu'il a dominée en seigneur dès le deuxième tour. Son dauphin est le Toulousain Jean-Christophe Péraud, médaillé d'argent au terme des huit tours de 4,5 km du circuit de Laoshan.
Quatre fois champion du monde de la discipline, le Vosgien, qui a eu 28 ans le 16 août et s'était déjà imposé à Athènes en 2004, a devancé Péraud, 11e à Athènes, d'une minute et 7 secondes. Le Suisse Nino Schurter, champion du monde espoir, a terminé troisième, à 1'53'' d'Absalon, vainqueur en une heure 55'59''. Schurter a devancé un autre coureur suisse, Christoph Sauser, médaillé de bronze aux Jeux en 2000 et proclamé récemment champion du monde de la discipline à Val di Sole. C'est la troisième médaille d'or consécutive de la France en VTT. Avant le triomphe d'Absalon à Athènes, Miguel Martinez avait été couronné en 2000 à Sydney. Beijing, August 23 - The French Julien Absalon has retained its title of Olympic champion Mountainbike Saturday in Beijing after a race he dominated a lord from the second round.
